Understanding the roots of white hot chocolate adds depth to your experience and appreciation for this delightful beverage. The story of hot chocolate begins centuries ago with the ancient Mayans and Aztecs, who revered cacao as a sacred food. Originally consumed as a bitter beverage mixed with spices and often used in religious ceremonies, chocolate underwent a transformation when it reached Europe in the 16th century. The introduction of sugar and milk turned the once-bitter drink into a sweet and creamy delight that quickly gained popularity across the continent.
