Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)

¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (for filling)

¼ cup brown sugar (for filling)

½ cup finely chopped nuts (optional, for filling)

¼ cup dried fruit (raisins or cranberries, optional, for filling)

1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Add melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture. Mix until combined.

In another bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and cinnamon.

Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal parts.

Roll each part into a round disc, about 10 inches in diameter.

Layer the discs on top of each other, brushing melted butter between layers and sprinkling with brown sugar, chopped nuts, and dried fruit as desired.

Once all four layers are stacked, cut the dough into 16 equal wedges, leaving the center uncut to form a star shape.

Twist each wedge away from the center, alternately rotating them to create the star design.

Cover the shaped star bread and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Brush the top with beaten egg for a golden finish.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Allow to cool slightly before transferring to a wire rack.
