Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup maple syrup, plus extra for serving

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup fresh strawberries, diced (optional)

1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Prep the Bread: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed brioche or challah bread and set aside.

Mix the Custard: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, adding the strawberries and nuts if using. Gently fold the mixture to ensure all the bread is soaked.

Refrigerate: Cover the bowl or transfer the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spread it evenly, and cover it with plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight (or for at least 4 hours) to allow the bread to soak up the custard.

Preheat Oven: On the day of baking, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake: Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature while the oven preheats. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.

Serve: Allow the casserole to cool slightly before dusting it with powdered sugar and serving warm with extra maple syrup on the side.
