Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

3/4 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup warm water (110°F)

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil)

1 egg (for egg wash)

Optional: Grated Parmesan cheese for topping

Optional: Fresh parsley or basil for garnish

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, mix the warm water with sugar and yeast. Let sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Prepare the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, garlic powder, and dried herbs. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Let it Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shape the Breadsticks: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12-14 inches long, then shape each rope into a heart by bending it in the middle and twisting the ends.

Prepare for Baking: Place the shaped breadsticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet. In a small bowl, beat the egg and brush each heart-shaped breadstick with the egg wash. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top if desired.

Bake the Breadsticks: Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Let them cool for a few minutes, then garnish with fresh herbs if desired. Serve warm with marinara or your favorite dipping sauce.
