Ingredients

2 cups dried navy beans (or 3 cans of navy beans, drained and rinsed)

6 slices thick-cut bacon, diced

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)

1/4 cup molasses

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon chili powder

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

Salt to taste

2 cups chicken or vegetable broth (or water)

Instructions

Prepare the Beans: If using dried beans, rinse and soak them overnight in a large bowl with plenty of water. The next day, drain and rinse the beans. Place them in a pot and cover with fresh water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until tender, about 1-1.5 hours. Drain and set aside.

Cook the Bacon: In a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven, cook the diced bacon over medium heat until crispy and browned. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set it aside on paper towels. Leave the bacon fat in the pot.

Sauté Aromatics: In the same pot, add chopped onions and garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes until onions become translucent and fragrant.

Combine Ingredients: Stir in the cooked or canned beans, BBQ sauce, molasses, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, chili powder, black pepper, cayenne (if using), and cooked bacon. Mix well to evenly coat the beans.

Add Broth: Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth. Stir to combine all the ingredients thoroughly. Taste and adjust salt or sweetness as desired.

Bake the Beans: Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Cover the pot with a lid or aluminum foil and transfer it to the preheated oven. Bake for about 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally. If you want the beans to be thicker, remove the lid for the last 30 minutes of baking.

Serve: Once the beans are cooked and have absorbed the flavors, remove them from the oven. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving. They pair wonderfully with cornbread or grilled meats!
