Ripe bananas are the star ingredient in this recipe, providing natural sweetness and moisture. As bananas ripen, their starches convert to sugars, making them sweeter and softer. This transformation not only enhances the flavor but also impacts the texture of the brownies. The natural sugars from the bananas reduce the need for additional sweeteners, allowing you to enjoy a dessert that is both delicious and slightly healthier. The distinct flavor of bananas complements the rich chocolate, making them an essential part of the brownies.

Ingredients

3 ripe bananas, mashed

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9x9 inch baking pan with parchment paper for easy removal.

Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the mashed bananas, applesauce, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Mix until smooth. Add eggs and vanilla extract, and whisk until well combined.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until evenly blended.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mix, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix! Fold in the walnuts and chocolate chips, if using.

Pour and Bake: Pour the brownie batter into your prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Cool and Serve: Allow the brownies to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then lift them out using the parchment paper and let them cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, cut into squares and enjoy!
